Physiotherapy Near Marlow

Living an active lifestyle is one of the reasons many people choose to live in and around Marlow. Whether it’s rowing on the River Thames, training for a marathon, cycling through the Chilterns, playing golf or simply enjoying long walks, staying active is part of everyday life. Unfortunately, it’s also why many people ignore the early signs of an injury. One of the most common things I hear is, “I thought it would settle if I gave it a week or two.” By the time they visit me, what started as a minor problem has often become something that’s affecting work, sleep or the activities they enjoy most.

If you’re looking for an experienced physiotherapist near Marlow, Clear Physio is based just a short drive away in Bourne End. Many of my patients travel from Marlow because they want individual care from the same physiotherapist throughout their recovery rather than seeing a different clinician at each appointment. With more than 30 years of clinical experience in both the NHS and private practice, I’ve helped thousands of people recover from sports injuries, back and neck pain, joint problems and post-operative rehabilitation.

Clear Physio

Understanding the Demands of an Active Lifestyle

My interest in sports injuries is personal as well as professional. Before becoming a physiotherapist, I competed as a rower and suffered a prolapsed disc in my lower back when I was 18. The injury left me unable to walk properly for almost six months. At the time, physiotherapy services were far less accessible than they are today, and I received very little guidance during my recovery.

That experience changed the direction of my career. It taught me how worrying pain can be when you don’t understand why it’s happening or how to recover safely. It also taught me that successful rehabilitation isn’t just about reducing pain. It’s about helping people regain confidence in their bodies so they can return to doing what they enjoy.

Even now, after three decades in practice, I still remember what it feels like to be the patient sitting on the other side of the consultation.

Why Patients from Marlow Choose Clear Physio

Although the clinic is based in Bourne End, I regularly treat patients from Marlow and the surrounding area. Many are runners preparing for events, rowers training on the Thames, golfers, cyclists and gym members. Others are busy professionals balancing work with family life who have gradually developed neck pain, lower back pain or shoulder stiffness through repetitive movements and long hours sitting.

One pattern I’ve noticed over the years is that active people often try to push through pain for far longer than they should. While determination is often a strength, it can also delay recovery. Small problems that could have been managed early sometimes develop into injuries that take much longer to rehabilitate.

My role is to identify not only where the pain is, but why it’s happening. Quite often the painful area isn’t the real cause. Shoulder pain may be influenced by the way the upper back moves, while recurring knee pain can sometimes be linked to weakness around the hips or changes in running mechanics. Finding those contributing factors is an important part of achieving long-term results.

Physiotherapy That Fits Your Goals

Every assessment begins with understanding what you want to achieve. Some patients want to complete their next marathon without pain. Others simply want to walk the dog, play with their grandchildren or return to work comfortably.

Depending on your condition, treatment may include manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, trigger point dry needling where clinically appropriate, exercise rehabilitation, movement analysis and a personalised home exercise programme.

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that complete rest is always the answer. While some injuries need protection during the early stages, most musculoskeletal conditions recover best when the right movement is introduced at the right time. Understanding how much to do, and when, is often what makes the difference between a straightforward recovery and a recurring problem.

What Happens at Your First Appointment?

Before your appointment you’ll complete a detailed questionnaire so I already have an understanding of your symptoms and medical history.

During the consultation we’ll discuss how your problem developed, how it’s affecting your daily life and what you want to achieve. This is followed by a detailed physical assessment looking at movement, strength, flexibility and function.

Many patients tell me that no one has previously explained why they are in pain. That’s something I believe is essential. I take time to explain my findings clearly, answer your questions and make sure you understand the reasoning behind your treatment plan.

Treatment usually begins during your first visit and may include hands-on physiotherapy, rehabilitation exercises, soft tissue techniques or dry needling where appropriate. You’ll also receive practical advice and exercises to continue at home, helping your recovery progress between appointments.

Patient Story

A recreational rower from the Marlow area came to see me with persistent lower back pain that had gradually worsened over several months. They had reduced their training, tried stretching and taken breaks from rowing, but the pain kept returning whenever they increased their distance.

Following a detailed assessment, we identified that the issue wasn’t simply the lower back itself. Reduced hip mobility and weaknesses affecting rowing technique were placing additional strain on the lumbar spine. Treatment combined manual therapy with a progressive strengthening programme and movement correction.

Over the following weeks, they returned to regular rowing without recurring symptoms and gained a better understanding of how to manage training loads to reduce the risk of future problems.
