Of course, it’s important to be as active as we can if we’re to stay in good physical health (as well as supporting our mental and emotional wellbeing)… but it’s also important that you don’t push yourself too hard before your body is ready, particularly when trying out a new sport or activity.
New research from AXA Health has just revealed over a fifth of Brits have injured themselves after seeing sporting professionals showcasing their skills on TV, with 50 per cent saying they were inspired by the top athletes seen during this year’s summer of sport.
It was found that 19 per cent of people returned to a sport they’d previously enjoyed after seeing different events play out this summer, with the likes of the Olympics and Paralympics proving to be particularly inspirational.
However, of those asked 28 per cent said they’d injured themselves as a result, struck down by cases of tennis elbow, shin splints and so on because they’d pushed themselves too hard. Furthermore, 30 per cent said that they never or rarely warmed up before exercising, causing problems for themselves for days afterwards.
Chief medical officer Dr John Burke said: “Our bodies need time to adapt to new physical demands, and rushing into intense workouts can lead to injury, burnout, or even setbacks. By taking a gradual approach, you’re more likely to enjoy the process, stay motivated, and achieve your fitness goals in a sustainable and injury free way.”
