Sitting culture is relatively pervasive these days, with many of us confined to chairs at work for hours and hours, with very few chances during the day to get up for a walk and a stretch.
It’s easy to simply accept this as part of life in the 21st century, but there’s a growing body of research that suggests it can be particularly damaging to our physical health, increasing the risks of diabetes, depression, dementia, cancer, weight gain and poor heart health.
You may have already started to experience a few aches and pains associated with sitting down. For example, do you have lower back pain or stiffness and soreness in the neck and shoulders? This is an indication that your occupational practices are starting to take their toll.
However, there’s a lot you can do to combat the effects of sitting all day – and moving around should be your first strategy to employ.
Every 30 minutes, get up out of your chair if possible to stretch your legs and improve your overall wellbeing. Desk yoga is also something to consider if you’re unable to get up as regularly as that.
You may also want to consider going for regular massage therapy if you are experiencing troubling levels of pain and discomfort.
Going to see a physio and having a massage is very effective at treating aches and pains, increasing your range of motion, supporting and improving mobility, helping with neck and shoulder pain, and helping you address any chronic lower back pain you might have.
