One very common physical complaint that children make – particularly those of primary school age – is that of growing pains, which can manifest during periods of especially fast growth.
It’s not entirely clear what causes growing pains in some children, but experts suggest that it might be down to the likes of increased physical activity, flat feet, scoliosis, hypermobility or even vitamin D deficiency. This pain is usually felt in the evening and at night, and is particularly prevalent among active children.
The good news is that these pains will resolve themselves relatively quickly, but you can help ease any pain your child is in through gentle massage and heat therapy, as well as talking through how they’re feeling so they don’t find themselves overly anxious.
It is important, however, to consider making an appointment with a physiotherapist or GP if your child’s symptoms persist. Joint pain can be symptomatic of other conditions, such as arthritis, poor posture and hypermobility.
How physio can help with growing pains
When you book a physiotherapy session for your child in with us here at Clear Physio, we’ll carry out a full assessment of their symptoms and provide you with a diagnosis so we can recommend an appropriate treatment strategy to help them.
We’ll review their posture, muscle strength and length, their mobility and range of movement, and see if there are any underlying causes that might be causing them pain.
We work closely with all our clients, adult and child alike, to devise tailored exercise programmes to reduce pain, restore mobility and get you moving well and without pain. Stretching programmes are particularly useful for growing pains and we focus on both passive and active stretching to help improve flexibility and reduce discomfort.
