What To Do About Hip Impingements

Aches and pains are typical and to be expected over the years, but it’s still important to listen to your body and pay close attention to the signals it gives you.

If you experience any pain or discomfort that you would consider to be out of the ordinary, it’s essential that you seek medical advice and intervention as soon as you can.

One relatively common issue, particularly among people who play lots of sport or those above a certain weight, is hip impingements, where bony changes on either the ball or the socket of the hip can damage the cartilage and cause pain.

If this goes untreated, it can lead to osteoarthritis in the hip joint.

What are the main hip impingement symptoms?

There are various symptoms to look out for that may indicate a hip impingement problem, including:

– Pain in the groin

– Pain down the front of the thigh

– Pain on the outside of hip

– Pain when running, twisting or changing direction

– Pain when bringing the knee towards the chest or when in a deep squat

– A catching sensation in the hip

How do you treat hip impingements?

To treat hip impingements, you can consider losing weight if necessary, as studies show that there is a link between obesity and this health condition.

Increasing your general exercise levels and improving your fitness will prove beneficial, with good exercises to consider including swimming, walking and cycling. Always make sure that you work within your own limitations and don’t put excess stress and strain on your body.

Strength exercises can also be beneficial, with focus placed on core strength and stability, and mobility around the hip joint and muscles.

Going to see a physiotherapist is advisable if you have hip impingements, as they’ll be able to come up with a programme of specific exercises tailored to suit you and your individual requirements.
