How Does Scoliosis Happen?

Scoliosis is a physical condition where the spine starts to twist and curve to the site, typically starting in childhood between the ages of ten and 15, although it can affect anyone of any age.

What are the symptoms of scoliosis?

There are various signs that may indicate scoliosis, including:

  • Leaning to one side
  • A visible curve to the spine
  • Uneven shoulders
  • Poorly fitting clothes
  • A shoulder, hip or ribs sticking out on one side
  • Possible back pain (typically manifesting in adults)

What are the main causes of scoliosis?

Unfortunately, in the majority of cases, the cause of scoliosis is not clear. This is known as idiopathic scoliosis, a condition that cannot be prevented and which could have a genetic link.

Other potential causes for scoliosis include:

  • Underlying conditions such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy (neuromuscular scoliosis)
  • Bones in the spine not forming properly in the womb (congenital scoliosis)
  • Changes to the spine with age (degenerative scoliosis)

How can scoliosis be treated?

There are different treatment options available for scoliosis and the right course of action will depend on your age, how severe the curve is and what the prognosis is.

Options include wearing a plaster cast or plastic back brace, surgery and pain relief such as painkillers and spinal injections.

Note, however, that many people don’t need any treatment for the condition and symptoms can improve over time. Only small numbers of people with scoliosis need to have surgery.

How does physiotherapy help with scoliosis?

Physiotherapy can be very beneficial for people with scoliosis, helping to address excessive spinal curvature and muscle imbalances that cause the spine to flex and affect posture, movement and mobility.

We work with you to develop a personalised treatment plan that includes specific exercises to benefit you, including upper and lower back rotational stretches, door frame stretches, side plank thread the needles, split stance with arm reach and so on.
