Is Whiplash Injury Real?

Physiotherapy Maidenhead whiplash

It’s a common misconception that whiplash injuries aren’t real, mainly because it can be difficult to diagnose thanks to a lack of visible evidence and only patient reports and testimonials to rely on.

However, whiplash is indeed a very real injury and one that can be quite debilitating if left untreated, taking a long time to recover from.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury caused by sudden movements of the head, typically caused by traffic accidents or slips, trips and falls. In such instances, the head moves back and forth rapidly and forcefully (much like the cracking of a whip, hence the name).

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

There are various symptoms to be aware of, including neck pain and stiffness, headaches (typically originating at the base of the skull), pain that worsens with neck movement, reduced range of motion in the neck, tingling or numbness in the arms, tenderness or pain in the arms, upper back and shoulders, dizziness and fatigue.

How can whiplash be treated?

It’s important to remain as active as you can, carrying out your normal everyday activities as far as possible. This may feel painful at first but it will improve recovery times. You can also take painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol. If your pain levels are high, your GP may be able to prescribe you with a stronger painkiller, such as codeine.
