As much fun as playing sports can be and as exciting as it is to put your body through its paces, it’s important to make sure you’re doing all you can to prevent injuries from taking place… as well as knowing what to do and what action to take if and when something does happen.
Here are three top tips to help you prevent injuries and ensure that you can carry on playing the sports you enjoy, without putting your body under too much pressure.
Use the appropriate equipment
Always wear the right equipment and clothing for the sport you’re planning to play, so you know you’re as protected as possible. This could include anything from mouth guards and helmets to shoulder pads, shinpads, face guards and more.
Don’t overdo it
Your body needs time to recover after training and playing sport, so make sure you’re giving yourself some down time as well to allow for recovery. Overuse can put a huge amount of stress and strain on your ligaments, joints and muscles, so listen to your body and rest when you need to.
Don’t play through pain
It’s always tempting to ignore twinges, niggles and painful spots and it’s very easy to dismiss these as simple aches and pains that will resolve themselves over time. Of course, this can happen – but only as long as you rest appropriately.
If you are in pain, don’t continue playing as you could make a bad situation even worse and increase your rehab time – perhaps quite significantly.
