With the start of a new year just around the corner, no doubt many of you are thinking about what goals you’d like to achieve in 2026… and, of course, health and wellbeing often takes centre stage at this time of year.
So, with this in mind, here are some excellent New Year’s resolutions to consider making if you’d like to prioritise your physical health over the coming 12 months.
1. Move more
Finding ways to encourage more physical activity is a great way to build new habits, whether that’s by always taking the stairs instead of getting in the lift, getting off the bus a few stops earlier than you would usually do, or walking to the shops instead of driving.
2. Follow a well-balanced diet
Making sure you’re hitting all the major food groups each day is advisable if you want to stay in good physical health.
This means eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and lean protein like fish and chicken, as well as limiting your intake of red meat. Following a Mediterranean diet is one of the best ways to hit your healthy eating goals.
3. Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water each day is advisable to protect your joints and muscles, lubricating them with synovial fluid to help reduce friction and stiffness, as well as transporting nutrients throughout the body, flushing out waste products and supporting efficient contraction, reducing the risk of cramps and fatigue.
4. Get good quality sleep regularly
One of the best resolutions for your health you can make is to prioritise sleep hygiene, aiming for between seven and nine hours of good sleep each night so that your body has enough time to repair and reenergise itself.
5. See a physiotherapist
Don’t ignore any aches and pains you’re experiencing, as they are unlikely to resolve themselves. Getting any lingering twinges assessed by a professional physiotherapist will help keep bigger problems at bay.
