How To Increase Your Activity Levels

We all know that getting enough exercise on a regular basis is key to promoting good health and wellbeing, mentally and emotionally, as well as physically.

But modern life often gets in the way and it can be difficult to stay active and engage in regular physical activity, so making a few little changes here and there can make a big difference to how you feel… and the more active you are, the more active you’ll find you want to be.

For example, pledging to yourself that you’ll always take the stairs is a really easy way to increase your activity levels. Depending on your current fitness, you may find it hard at first but after a few weeks of avoiding the escalator or the lift, you’ll find it much easier to get to the top – and this is sure to spur you on.

And simply standing up can help you physically if you’re unable to take part in any organised exercise activity. Sitting down is generally really bad for your health, as it slows your metabolism down, constricts your circulation and turns your muscles off.

Perhaps start by always standing up on public transport or investing in a standing desk so you have the option not to sit. You’ll burn more calories standing up than you will sitting down and as you grow stronger, you may well find you prefer to stand after all.

And, of course, walking is excellent exercise and a really enjoyable way to start being more active. What about exploring your local neighbourhood and trying to find some hidden gems? Or you could head out into some nearby countryside and see what’s on your doorstep.

With a new year on the horizon, promising yourself to walk for at least 15 minutes a day could be an excellent resolution to make.
