Surgical procedures are often a necessity, for a variety of different reasons, and it’s often the case that post-surgical rehab will be required to restore full physical function and mobility.
It’s highly unlikely that any kind of surgery will not come with some kind of post-operative consequence – and, as such, physiotherapy can prove particularly beneficial at getting you back on your feet, both physically and mentally/emotionally.
Potential consequences of surgery include reduced strength and range of movement, pain, issues with coordination and balance, breathing difficulties, postural problems, loss of sensation, continence problems, muscle shortening, weakness and so on… all of which can be worked through successfully with a qualified and experienced physio.
It’s likely that you’ll be seen by a physiotherapist while you’re in hospital but, once you’ve been discharged, you would be advised to continue with these sessions to ensure a full and speedy recovery.
Your physio will carry out an in-depth evaluation after your surgery and come up with a specific treatment plan to restore normal flexibility, strength and mobility, prevent surgical side-effects and ensure that you can return to your normal daily activities as soon as possible.
Remember, however, that you’re not looking for a quick fix and you should expect it to take some time – perhaps a couple of months – for your physio treatments to see success. As such, seeking early treatment is advisable to help joints and tissues recover without scar formation.
You should also expect to be assigned exercises to carry out at home to help support the in-person work your physio performs.
If you’re about to go into surgery, note that you can also opt for pre-operative physiotherapy, which can help you get ready for the surgery itself and help set the scene for more effective care and rehabilitation after the operation has been carried out.
