Now that the weather is finally starting to turn and it’s finally starting to warm up a bit, we can all start thinking about getting outside in the fresh springtime air right now… and if you’re looking for new and fun way to get more exercise while being out and about, what about putting on a pair of roller skates and seeing how you like it?
Roller skating first came to the fore way back in the 1880s and it became particularly popular in the US between the 1930s and 1950s, before falling out of favour and then really coming back with a vengeance in the 70s, thanks to disco music and roller discos.
It seems as though roller skating is starting to come back into fashion, however, and there are lots of different accounts on sites like Instagram you can follow for some roller inspiration, as well as lots of different roller derby teams around the country that you could also consider joining.
Beyond that, however, roller skating is a really good way to get lots of exercise – while having lots of fun at the same time! It can help improve your cardiovascular health, strengthen your muscles and burn lots of calories… and it’s great fun for all the family, especially if you have younger children.
That being said, it’s important that you do all you can to prevent injuries, as these are relatively easy to sustain while skating. Wearing protective gear is a must, including a helmet, elbow and knee pads and wrist guards.
You’re likely to fall down, especially if you haven’t skated for a while, so protecting yourself against scraps, cuts and bruises will be necessary.
Ankle injuries are also common, so make sure that you’re wearing the righ tkind of socks and have some extra cushioning in your skates, just in case. You can also consider using an ankle sleeve to give you extra protection.
If you do sustain an injury while skating in the springtime sunshine, don’t forget that you can always come and see us here at Clear Physio for a lovely deep tissue massage. We’ll have you back in your skates in no time.
