Pregnancy-Associated Osteoporosis: Can Physio Help?

Physiotherapist Maidenhead

Physical changes are an expected part of pregnancy, including everything from morning sickness and swelling to back pain, abdominal separation, skin and hair changes, heartburn, pelvic girdle pain and so on.

One rare complication, however, is pregnancy-associated osteoporosis, where bones fracture easily around the time you give birth.

Osteoporosis is where the bones start to lose strength, making breaks and fractures more likely. This usually happens as we get older or down to other underlying medical conditions, but it can also happen during pregnancy, where low bone density becomes problematic.

It is not currently known what causes the condition among pregnant women, so it can be frightening to receive a diagnosis.

You may have pregnancy-associated osteoporosis if you experience back pain that either comes on gradually or which is sudden and severe, pain that prevents you from carrying out normal everyday activities, a loss of height or a change in body shape.

If a bone break does happen during pregnancy, a diagnosis isn’t usually made until post-birth because an X-ray will be needed and these are typically avoided during pregnancy to keep the baby safe from radiation.

How can physio help with pregnancy-associated osteoporosis?

Physio can help with osteoporosis by working on increasing bone density through guided weight-bearing exercises. These can help strengthen bones and reduce the risk of further bone mass loss. Your physio will work with you to devise a specific programme of exercises that are suited to you.

Seeing a physiotherapist can also help you reduce any pain you’re in, improve your flexibility and range of motion, and improve your balance and stability. If you’d like to find out more about how you could benefit, get in touch with the Clear Physio team today.
